John R. Young & Co. - History
The year was 1890, it would be three years before the first automobile was sold. In 1890, John R. Young began blending and delivering fuel oil and kerosene to homes and businesses with a horse and wagon from the small village of Hendricks, PA in Montgomery County. The Pennzoil Company was just one year old.

As the new century began, America entered “The Motor Age”. John R. Young, a true pioneer in the industry, grew with it and built a reputation for quality and service. His business prospered.

In 1929 the John R. Young & Company Incorporated. John R.’s five sons and daughter worked for the company. The Young Company was, and still is, truly a family operation. 1929 was the year the Young Company became one of the first distributors of Pennzoil and installed the first electric service station pump between Allentown and Norristown in Graterford, Pa.

The 1940’s saw the use of oil for home heating increase rapidly. Once again, John R. Young & Company lead the way.

In the 1950’s, the Young Company constructed a new tank farm on Perkiomenville Road for the storage of heating oil to serve an increasing customer base.

In the 1960’s the fourth generation of Youngs entered the business as four of John R.’s grand- children carried on the family tradition.

In the early 1960’s the Young Company expanded it’s Pennzoil Distribution to Berks, Bucks, Chester counties as well as Montgomery.

A warehouse was opened in 1968 in Perkiomenville to handle the growing Pennzoil motor oil and lubricants business as well as tires, batteries, filters, and automotive accessories.

The first convenience store, Young’s Mart, was opened on Route 63 in 1982 selling Citgo Gasoline, Diesel Fuel, Kerosene, hunting & fishing supplies, and convenience store items.

In 1990 John R. Young & Company celebrated their 100th anniversary. That year was a big year in many ways for the company. First another convenience store, Young’s Mart, was opened on Route 29 between Perkiomenville and Zieglerville. The retail tire business was moved out of the warehouse to a new location at 700 Long Alley in Pennsburg – Young’s Tire Center was born serving retail customers with Tires, Batteries, Oil Changes, State Inspections, Alignments, and automotive repairs.

The Petroleum division in 1998 merged with the former Fred K. Kleinbach Sons, Inc. company and the corporate and petroleum offices of the company were, for the first time, moved from the original location in the village of Hendricks to the newly remodeled offices of the former Kleinbach company on Route 29 in Green Lane.

1999 saw the Pennzoil Company increase the companies distributorship area to include the counties of York and Lancaster.

In the year 2000 the Pennzoil Company merged with the Quaker State Company allowing John R. Young & Company to expand its product line to include Quaker State products as well as awarding the company distributorships in York, Schuylkill, Lebanon, Lancaster, & Dauphin Counties.

Today the fourth and fifth generation countinues the business… setting new standards of excellence.

Tomorrow - let us serve you and grow together.
